First-year law students heard from Residential School survivors and Judge Len Marchand Jr. during a field trip to the former Kamloops Indian Residential School on Jan. 27, organized by law faculty members Janna Promislow, Nicole Schabus and Charis Kamphuis. Sustainability: It's in our handsStaff and faculty learned how sustainable thinking can directly improve life and work at the annual InService Day on Feb. 22, which featured a keynote presentation and workshop by award-winning writer and futurist Alex Steffen.

Biology students can obtain double degree in SpainCellular, molecular and microbial biology majors can complete double degrees from TRU and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) thanks to a new agreement signed with the Spanish university on Jan. 19.

Students, staff and faculty can now access a shared vehicle for round-trip travel from campus—for a lunch hour, or a week—through Zipcar, a car-sharing program that launched at TRU in January. Read more

Information security insightsIT Services held the third annual TRU Privacy and Security Conference on Feb. 1. This year's conference was called Incidents and Your Organization: Risk, Impact and Mitigation and included a range of speakers on privacy, ransomware and more.

Students of today and tomorrowThe 13th annual Teaching Practices Colloquium on Feb. 20 shared scholarly teaching practices and approaches toward understanding the intervening factors needed to reimagine and re-define the students of today and tomorrow.

Language for cultural preservationA public forum on Feb. 17, co-hosted by the Office of Aboriginal Education and the Bangladesh Cultural Association of Kamloops, discussed the importance of language for cultural preservation in celebration of International Mother Language Day (Feb. 21).

Chinese New YearThe Chinese Students and Scholars Association presented the Spring Festival Gala (Chinese New Year) on Jan. 20, celebrating Chinese culture with food, performances, games and fireworks.

The library has eliminated fines on overdue books, part of a new student-centred approach to make the library more user-friendly. Read more

Sheila Blackstock, Nursing, was inducted into the Mu Sigma chapter of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) on Jan. 28 for academic achievement and scholarship in nursing. Nathan Matthew, TRU honorary degree recipient and former executive director of Aboriginal Education, was named the 2017 winner of the Education Indspire Award, recognizing his distinguished and impactful career as an educator and advocate for First Nations communities. Madison Olds, Bachelor of Arts student, was recognized with a 2017 Emerging Artist Award for her accomplishments and potential in the performing arts at the 10th annual Mayor’s Gala for the Arts on Jan. 21 in Kamloops. The band Bees and the Bare Bones, of which she is a member, was also a nominee for the award. The 2016 Trades Training House was awarded a 2017 Keystone Home Builders Award of Excellence for Best Public/Private Partnership by the Canadian Home Builders' Association Central Interior (CHBACI) on Feb. 4, at the 12th annual gala in TRU’s Grand Hall. Cvetozar Vutev, music faculty member, Kamloops Symphony concertmaster and music director and violinist, was recognized with a 2017 Artist of the Year – Performing Arts Award at the 10th annual Mayor’s Gala for the Arts on Jan. 21 in Kamloops.

Wendy Lehar was a sessional reference and instruction librarian at TRU Library and a Bachelor of Arts alumna ('06). She was involved in the library's orientation and IDays events, volunteered as a tutor at the Writing Centre, and played a key role in building the library's Leisure Reading Collection. Also an amazing baker, Wendy will be fondly remembered by her colleagues for her "gingerbread librarians."
