TRU's developing strength in research that directly impacts our communities and the nation was affirmed with federal funding of three more Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) positions. Announced on Dec. 6, the CRCs are: Shelly Johnson, Faculty of Education and Social Work CRC in Indigenizing Higher Education Yana Nec, Faculty of Science CRC in Applied Mathematics and Optimization Heather Price, Faculty of Arts CRC in Culture and Communities: Children and the Law These CRCs join Courtney Mason, who was introduced as CRC in Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Communities in the Faculty of Adventure, Culinary Arts and Tourism in February 2016. Together they represent a $2 million investment from the federal government. Read more

At the annual TRU Foundation awards ceremony on Nov. 24, 574 students shared in more than $614,000 in awards, a $75,000 increase from last year. Read more

Jonathan Van Hamme, Biological Sciences, is leading a $190,000 research project funded by Genome BC, using genomic tools to examine the effects of biosolids applied to mine reclamation sites. Read more

Inspired, Engaged is a celebration of the world-class research taking place at TRU. The fourth annual report, released on Nov. 23, showcases the depth and diversity of research occurring across all faculties. Read more

The School of Business and Economics opened its new SoBE Student Centre on Nov. 25. The centre offers dedicated study space and brings the Bachelor of Business Administration advising team to the International Building. Read more

The TRU Students’ Union equity committee held its annual Storytellers Gala on Nov. 17. A four-person panel examined the impacts of over-representation of Aboriginal youth in Canada’s state care and correctional systems. Read more

A new exam room at the Williams Lake and District Credit Union Community Health Centre will expand services to the community and provide experience for TRU nursing students. Read more

AchievementsNic Zdunich, a 2016 Bachelor of Arts alumnus, was named TRU’s Co-op Student of the Year for 2016. His performance as a communications assistant in two co-op terms at TRIUMF, Canada’s national lab for particle and nuclear physics, earned him a full-time strategic communications associate position at the facility.

Let’s RememberMaren Schmitz was a former exchange student from Heidelberg University of Education in Germany who entered the Bachelor of Education program in September 2016. Excited to study in Canada, she embraced this new experience. In class, she engaged with her classmates and shared her love of running, her passion to be a teacher, and her drive to do her best at all times.

Nov. 28 - Dec. 17Students can take a break from studying, refresh their minds and have a bit of fun in the Stress-Free Zone (#SFZ) on the first floor of the House of Learning—leaving the rest of the building for quiet study. #SFZ is a collaboration between the Library, Counselling Services and the Wellness Centre. Exam periodDec. 5-17During the exam period, study halls at both the Main Library and House of Learning Library will be open until midnight (Dec. 3 to 16 at the Main Library, and Dec. 4 to 14 at the House of Learning) to allow students to use the full study space for exams.

President's Annual Holiday ReceptionDec. 15Join your TRU colleagues to celebrate the festive season with an afternoon social, 3-5 p.m. in the Grand Hall at the Campus Activity Centre.

Campus network maintenanceDec. 18On-campus users will have no Internet access from 6 to 8 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18 while IT Services performs network maintenance to improve network security and reliability. From 8 to 10 a.m. there may be minor disruptions as further upgrades are made.

Campus closed: winter breakDec. 23 - Jan. 2Most campus services are closed for winter break, beginning at noon on Dec. 23, 2016. The campus reopens on Jan. 3, 2017. Have a safe and happy holiday.

Winter Town Hall: budget developmentJan. 10As part of the Open Governance initiative, faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the second Town Hall of 2016/17 for a discussion on the development of the proposed budget. The Town Hall will be live-streamed for those unable to attend.
