Everyone is invited to attend this year’s Little Lectures, Big Ideas, an in-person event featuring some of the top academics from the Faculty of Arts. This mini lecture event (think TED Talks) shines the spotlight on subject experts as they deliver short talks on today’s biggest and most pressing issues at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Kamloops.

Hear from, and bring questions for, faculty members who were instrumental in building the Master of Arts in Human Rights and Social Justice program.

Dr. Jenni M. Karl — Building Brains from Behaviour: Insights from Sensorimotor Development

Dr. Nicholas (Nick) Hrynyk — Queer Fear and Resilience: Exploring 2SLGBTQIA+ Anticipations of Violence

Learn about the history of violence against queer communities and how they have responded with resilience and resistance. Dr. Nick Hrynyk will examine the intersection of queer fear and community resilience, and how this can bridge the gap between experiences of queer community members and policy makers’ goals.

Benjamin Woodford — John Milton’s Vision of Freedom: A Historical and Literary Perspective

Assistant Professor Benjamin Woodford will discuss John Milton’s concept of freedom as it appears in his poetry and prose. Explore the historical context of Milton’s work and how it reflects his vision of a just and free society, and discover how his vision continues to inspire and challenge us today.

Dr. Rochelle Stevenson — The Human-Animal Connection: Exploring Interpersonal and Animal Violence

Join Dr. Rochelle Stevenson as she examines the important relationship between humans and animals, particularly at the intersection of interpersonal and animal violence. Drawing on her research on animal abuse and mistreatment, Stevenson will discuss how we can work towards a more just and compassionate society.
