Environmental Science Seminar Series – The 2014 Mount Polley mine tailings spill: response and recovery

Speaker: Dr. Lyn Anglin, Imperial Metals Corp

It has been over eight years since the tailings dam at the Mount Polley Mine suffered a failure of underlying glacial materials, and spilled 25 million cubic metres of water, tailings and earthen dam materials into the surrounding environment.

The company immediately responded with actions aimed at controlling the spill, assessing the impacts and remediating the affected areas.

The company has invested over $70 million in clean-up and repair, human health and environmental impact and risk assessment studies, ongoing monitoring studies and extensive ecological remediation.

Significant progress has been made on the remediation work, including tremendous success with building rainbow trout and salmon spawning habitat.

This talk will provide an overview of the company’s response, and the state of the recovery of the affected ecosystems.
