Building on its successful showing at the 2022 Hooplaw event, TRU Law brought home the championship in this year’s competition.

Established in 1995, Hooplaw is an annual event that brings together the legal community throughout the Lower Mainland and BC’s three law schools to raise money for charity. This year’s charities were the Children’s Hearing and Speech Centre of BC, Night Hoops, The Mother’s Matter Centre and the Rotary Club of Vancouver Sunrise Foundation. For the second year in a row, the event raised over $100,000 and was attended by Premier David Eby and Attorney General Niki Sharma.

Led by the Most Valuable Player of the tournament Michael Rouault (Class of 2023), TRU Law’s team was undefeated. Rouault scored a buzzer-beating layup against the Crown counsel team to get to the championship game, where TRU Law ousted Clark Wilson LLP. Valuable contributions were made by team captain Braedan Fitzpatrick and players Charn Sidhu, Amarvir Mann, Januel Ibasco, Barry Sangha (all class of 2024) and Ben Turner (class of 2023).

For the second consecutive year, TRU Law also took home the trophy for most fundraising by a BC law school, beating out both the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria.

The players were not the only TRU community members in attendance. Dean Daleen Millard cheered on the team, along with Andrew Hung (class of 2024), who also volunteered at the event. Additionally, many TRU alumni represented the faculty, as they played across multiple firm teams.
