Dr. Kathleen Scherf to be installed as TRU's second President

September 29, 2008

The presidential installation begins at 2 pm in the gymnasium at TRU, and follows a long tradition that has evolved in universities around the world; a formal ceremony replete with the ceremonial staff, the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra and a procession of faculty, administrators, staff members and students attired in academic regalia.

“The installation ceremony represents the history and continuity of the institution and its place within the larger academic community,” said Josh Keller, TRU Director of Marketing and Communications. “The installation of a new president provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the university’s mandate and mission, as well as to welcome our new leader, demonstrate our support and join in a celebration of renewal.”

The pomp and circumstance of the Presidential Installation will add an air of special importance to the TRU graduates who are part of the Fall Convocation ceremony immediately following the installation.

TRU added a Fall Convocation ceremony in 2006 for a several reasons; for those students who finished their programs during the summer semester, so they didn’t have to wait almost a full year to cross the convocation platform; a growing contingent of students who complete their programs through Open Learning after the spring ceremony, for students graduating from programs ending this fall like nursing, computing and electronics.

This year, that adds up to a potential of 429 graduates from 70 degree, diploma and certificate programs. As is the case with the spring ceremony, not all will attend but they can watch the live webcast at www.tru.ca.
