Dr. Joyce O'Mahony
Associate Professor
School of Nursing
Summary
Dr. Joyce O'Mahony has expertise in public health nursing practice, and immigrant and refugee women's community-based mental health care research. Her research program focuses on immigrant women's postpartum depression experiences, access to mental health care services, and intervention strategies for postpartum care. Her research is motivated by the need to further the understanding about migrant women¹s postpartum health, their social support needs, and treatment preferences in order to provide culturally sensitive and equitable health care services. Most importantly, research capacity is developed to reach this underserved population and link with healthcare policy and the broader applications for service delivery and program initiatives within the healthcare authorities in BC and across Canada. She has experience working with collaborative interdisciplinary research teams enabling her to direct research focused on: client benefit in primary health care, maternity care, lay understanding of health of illness, access to services under the broad umbrella of social justice, and challenging health inequities.
