The Canadian Youth Delegation to Copenhagen has selected Thompson Rivers University student, Tria Donaldson, to attend the UN climate change conference next month in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The Canadian Youth Delegation (CYD) is sending 30 youth to Copenhagen to join forces with more than 1,000 youth from around the world to voice their concerns and champion measures to fight climate change. The Copenhagen group also has a Facebook fan page under Canadian Youth Delegation to Copenhagen (COP15)
The Canadian Youth Delegation has been involved in groundbreaking policy and communications work at previous UN climate conferences and has influenced the process of these international negotiations.
‘I am very excited about the opportunity to go to Copenhagen and work with other young people towards a fair, ambitious and binding agreement there. Climate change is the most pressing issue that my generation will face. We need to take action now.’
– TRU student Tria Donaldson
CYD attendees will coordinate a variety of activities, including policy research and writing, creative outreach events, and writing and blogging about the conference.
Acceptance to the delegation was highly competitive, with an outstanding roster of applicants.
Donaldson has been an active volunteer in the Kamloops community for several years, working with the TRU ECO-committee, Developing World Connections, and the TRU Students’ Union. She is currently the project manager for goBeyond, a youth driven climate project that works with 12 post-secondary institutions in BC.
The Canadian Youth Delegation will also be meeting with the official Canadian negotiating team, as well as meeting with the Minister of Environment and various other figures from the Canadian government to advocate for strong climate legislation
The Canadian Youth Delegation, launched in the fall of 2006 to engage youth in international climate change negotiation processes, is a project of the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition.
