The federal government announced the re-appointment of Dr. Fraser as a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Community and Ecosystem Ecology at Thompson Rivers University.

Originally appointed on April 5, 2004, Tier 2 Chairs are federally funded positions for exceptional emerging researchersFor each Tier 2 Chair, the university receives $100,000 annually for five years.

“The reappointment nationally recognizes Dr. Lauchan Fraser as an exceptional researcher with the potential to lead his field, ” said Dr. Nancy Van Wagoner, TRU Associate Vice president of Research and Graduate Studies about the Sept23 announcement”. Lauch has made outstanding contributions to Canada through his research into grassland and wetland ecosystems and their complex interactions, including human impacts on these natural environments, and climate change.”

“Not only has the Tier 2 CRC appointment enabled me to develop expertise in grassland and wetland ecosystems and further my knowledge on ecological processes of those systems,” said Dr. Fraser”. I have been able to disseminate my research findings on a level that far exceeds what I may have accomplished without a Tier 2 CRC”.

During the last four years Fraser has published sixteen papers in high ranking peer-reviewed journals, co-edited a book published by Cambridge University Press, written four book chapters, supervised eleven graduate students, and is the Principal Investigator on numerous research grants totaling approximately $1.5 million and a participant on other national and international with over $1 million in funding.

More evidence of his impact is demonstrated by invitations to be a plenary speaker at three conferences and invitations to be a seminar speaker at nationally and internationally. In addition, Fraser has been appointed an Associate Editor with three international peer-reviewed journals.
