Sahil Dahiya, a third-year Bachelor of Science student from Gurgaon, India, first discovered co-op during his first year when he came across the Career and Experiential Learning office on his way to class. “Intrigued, I looked it up on TRU’s website. I wanted to gain hands-on experience, apply my coursework learning to real-world situations, and enhance my practical skills. The program was a perfect opportunity to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional development.”

Dahiya completed two co-op terms, one as a laboratory analyst with ALS and the second in microbiology at Teck. For his third term, he returned to Teck in the environmental department at technical services, where he supported several innovative research projects.

“One of the coolest moments from my previous work terms was during my second term, where I was involved in various staining protocol development for light microscopy. This project was fascinating as it allowed me to explore and optimize different techniques to enhance the visualization of cellular structures. Additionally, I had the opportunity to work with data analysis from electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy. This experience was invaluable as it improved my technical skills and deepened my understanding of advanced imaging techniques. The most valuable lesson I learned was the importance of meticulous attention to detail and the ability to adapt and troubleshoot protocols to achieve the best results.”

“I worked on an exciting research project that involved studying bio-weathering’s biochemical and mechanical fungal processes, which combined microbiology, biochemistry, and environmental science elements. I learned how fungi interact with their environment and contribute to weathering, which has significant implications for natural processes and potential industrial applications.”

Participating in co-op taught him how to write technical plans, reports, and literature reviews, conduct experiments and provide a comprehensive research experience.

“Co-op has significantly benefited me as a person, a student, a professional and a researcher. The hands-on experience of applying theoretical knowledge to practical problems has been invaluable. I have gained technical skills in microscopy, data analysis, and experimental design, as well as transferable skills in scientific writing and communication. I’m more confident in my abilities, more adaptable to new challenges, and more passionate about pursuing a career in scientific research.

“Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate to receive support from various individuals. My co-op advisor, Sarah Gibson, has been incredibly supportive, providing me with guidance, mentorship, and opportunities to grow professionally. My family has also been a tremendous source of support. They have always believed in me and encouraged me to follow my passion for science. Their constant encouragement and understanding have been crucial, especially during challenging times. My peers and colleagues have also played an essential role in my journey. Collaborating with them on projects and sharing knowledge and experiences has been motivating and inspiring. Their support has made my academic and research experiences even more enriching.”

Gibson, the co-op coordinator for arts, sciences, natural resource sciences, and bachelor of interdisciplinary studies, said, “Sahil is a devoted, courageous and extraordinary student leader.  He founded the TRUSU Hindu Prayer Club, which exemplifies how he operates: blending peace, calm and resilience with drive and determination.”

Reflecting on Dahiya’s performance as a research coach in a Co-op 1000 course, Gibson noted, “He modelled authenticity and courage in the workplace, inspiring students to be the best version of themselves.”

After completing his third term, Dahiya focused on finishing his degree and entering the workforce. “I’m confident in what I’ve learned and gained through all my co-op work terms, which have equipped me with practical experience and valuable skills. I’m excited to delve deeper into my studies and continue building on the solid foundation I’ve established through my co-op experiences.”
