Karen Densky, Senior Lecturer in the English as a Second Language Department (Faculty of Education and Social Work) returned from a trip to Athens, Greece in late February, where she was a nominated delegate at the global Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Summit. Densky, who has been involved in TRU’s Teaching English as a Second Language certificate since its inception, was one of four Canadians at the event, which hosted two hundred delegates from sixty-four countries. The goal of the Summit was to examine the future of the TESOL profession with regard to the four themes of Futurology, English in Multilingualism, Reimagining English Competence, and The Profession as a Change Agent, each of which was approached based on the guiding principles of Equity, Professionalism, and Inquiry. Follow-up work by Summit delegates will be undertaken and shared at the TESOL International Convention in Seattle, WA (March 2017) and Chicago, IL (March 2018).
