Hi – I’m Sarah! I am in the Bachelor of Business Administration program here at TRU, with a major in Human Resources and a minor in Accounting. I began

my Co-op work term with the Career Education Department last month in May as a Communications Coordinator. So far, I have absolutely enjoyed the work I have been doing, and am ecstatic about the work I will be doing over the next few months.

One month has now passed in my four month work-term, and I wish I was able to stay longer. Not only do the people I work with make my job more enjoyable, but I love the work I’m doing. My main task during the past month was to overhaul the Career Education Department website and implement updated information for students, employers and staff. This has been a huge task and is now largely completed. As well, I also produced marketing materials through animation and infographics, contacted students about showcasing their Co-op experiences through video and blog posts, and met many people, already making great professional connections.

One of the most important things I learned about this job began with my application. Instead of searching for positions within the HR or Accounting field, I looked into postings that suited both my skills and abilities, and my interests. Though I am not a marketing student, my abilities of organization, attention to detail, computer skills, communication and my desire to work on campus with a department I was familiar with led me to apply for the position that I currently hold. With that, my advice to all students would be not to be intimidated by job postings. Show your potential employer what capabilities you have to offer their company and how you would be an asset. Search for jobs that not only suit your abilities, but could expand your breadth of knowledge, too. Your enthusiasm for a position will show through to an employer, so not only do they get a passionate worker, you gain experience that will inevitably help you in your future.

If you are a current co-op, non-co-op student, alumni or employer who would like to be featured in a blog post like this, please email me at careereducation@tru.ca.
