As of this morning (January 11, 2016) Thompson Rivers University Faculty Association (TRUFA) has issued 72-hours’ notice that it intends to initiate job action at Thompson Rivers University (TRU).

Although TRU and TRUFA have been making progress at the bargaining table, TRUFA has decided to issue 72 hours’ strike notice as of this morning at 8:40 a.m. This means that TRUFA could choose to initiate a full strike or take other forms of strike action as early as 8:00 a.m. January 14, 2016. It is expected that TRUFA will provide advance notice of the type of strike action they intend to conduct so that students are informed of any impact on their studies.

TRU is disappointed that TRUFA is issuing 72-hour strike notice saying they are open to mediation despite not responding to TRU’s January 7, 2016 offer of mediation to assist the parties in finding resolution at that bargaining table.

The TRUFA Executive team has provided no signal as to the nature or duration of the strike action it intends to launch. TRU remains hopeful that both parties can reach a tentative agreement without a labour disruption. TRU is committed to being available to meet with TRUFA, and to continue bargaining in an attempt to reach a settlement. TRU re-extended the offer of mediation to help both parties resolve outstanding issues on January 7, 2016.

TRU will immediately update students, parents and other employees on the TRU website if strike action occurs. Updates will be posted to www.tru.ca. Most questions can be answered by consulting the Q&A at this website; if you have additional inquiries please do not hesitate to email labourupdate@tru.ca.
