Thompson Rivers University students are achieving career success and are earning competitive salaries in their chosen fields, shows a comprehensive new report from BC’s six research universities.
The second annual report, called Putting Degrees to Work, underlines the importance of a university degree in today’s economy. The evidence shows graduates get the jobs they want, in the regions where they want to work and are paid competitive salaries that escalate over the course of their careers.
The report was released by the Research Universities’ Council of British Columbia.
“Our graduates are putting their education to work. They are finding good, family-supporting jobs in their fields of study,” said TRU President Dr. Alan Shaver. “They are contributing to our region and helping to diversify BC’s economy.”
Key findings
- Two years after graduation, nearly half of TRU grads – 47 per cent – were earning $50,000 or more, well above the salaries earned by other young people entering the workforce.
- Seventy-seven per cent of TRU graduates said their program of study was relevant to their career.
- Ninety-six per cent of TRU grads are satisfied, or very satisfied, with their education.
- Ninety-six per cent of TRU grads give top marks to the quality of instruction they received.
The report represents five years of data collected by BC Stats. Students are surveyed two years after graduation and are asked about their employment, salary, where they choose to live and whether their education is relevant to their careers.
“This is further evidence that a university education pays long term dividends,” said Shaver. “The high quality of education provided by TRU is helping drive BC’s dynamic and diversified economy by providing the highly-educated and skilled workforce we need. Our graduates have the right education, the right skills and the right training to lead British Columbia.”
