The Friends of Guerin Creek, a newly formed group dedicated to the well-being of the creek, will be cleaning up the garbage and recyclables in and around the creek and ravine between Summit Drive and Lombard Street on Sunday, September 27, 2009, starting at 9:00 am at Powers Memorial Park (located on the corner of Centre Avenue and Battle Street)Volunteers are encouraged to help in the effort but are asked to please register beforehand.

The Friends of Guerin Creek group is working to eventually see the area turned into some sort of official city park, and is planning the creek clean-up as the first step in this process. September 27 has been chosen since it coincides with both World Rivers Day, and the last day of the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-Up event. The group consists of concerned citizens, members of the Kamloops West Rotary club, and students and staff from Thompson Rivers University (TRU), including members from the TRU Students Union, TRU ECO, and the TRU Adventure Studies Department. The group is chaired by Dr. Tom Owen, TRU Director of Environment and Sustainability.

The group would be delighted to receive any volunteer help in the clean-up effort, but asks that anyone interested to please register so that the volunteer effort can be properly coordinated to avoid possible danger to volunteers, due to some cliff areas, and to also avoid harming the delicate ecology in parts of the creek.

If you would like further information about the group, the clean-up, or would like to volunteer, please contact Kaitlin Boyd at 250-572-0989 or email kaitlin.boyd@gmail.com.
