Test old-time logging skills during Lumberjack Games

April 4, 2016

A lot of skills come into play while working a two-person saw.

Well before mechanization and chainsaws, loggers liked to show off their skills by competing in tournaments.

And you can too.

Lumberjack Games returns to campus April 8. Watch—and try—logger sports such as cutting a log with a two-person saw, throwing a heavy axe or trying to keep your balance on a wet and slippery log that’s partially submerged in water. Form your lumberjack team for the relay competition. See below for the schedule.

For further fun, you are invited to dress up in lumberjack attire—plaid, jeans and knitted winter hats.

Lumberjack Games is also an opportunity to celebrate the dual role trees continue to play in BC: economic resource and natural beauty. In that spirit, the Environment and Sustainability department will be giving away 160 Douglas Fir seedlings, and will plant a six-foot Frazer Fir behind the Barber Centre (at 10 a.m near the bike shelter). Last year sustainability added a white spruce to a walkway between House of Learning and the International Building.

Log rolling

Among other things, log rolling tests balance, nimbleness and determination.

The Wellness Centre, Environment and Sustainability, Recreation and the International Students Activity Program (ISAP) all have a part in organizing and presenting the day.

Register your team
Register your team at the ISAP desk located on the first floor of the International Building, open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday.
