A Keremeos Ranch is one of the first in Canada to use virtual fencing collars for cattle management, working in partnership with undergraduate research assistant Thomas Alexander. The collars, which hang around the cow’s neck, have a speaker that goes against the breast of the animal. “When the cow goes towards a boundary at about five metres away from the boundary, it will send out a high-pitched tone and that is kind of a warning system,” says Alexander.
