Can you name that bird or that wildflower?
Field Ornithology and Field Botany are two new field courses offered by the Department of Biological Sciences that will introduce students to the native plants and birds found in our local landscapes.
TRU offers many different field courses that allow students to learn about landscapes and cultures in far away places (Japan, Belize, or even the outer coast of Vancouver Island at the Bamfield Marine Station), and these new courses will complement existing field courses by exploring the native flora and fauna of our local landscape.
With the advent of spring comes the return of many bird migrants and the emergence of our native wildflower species.
Students enrolled in these courses will gain valuable hands-on experience with the taxonomy and field identification of these groups. Many experts have expressed dismay that fewer and fewer of us can recognize the iconic plants and animals that share our homes. These courses are designed to give students a working knowledge of their plant and bird neighbours.
