Dr. Silvia Straka of the School of Social Work and Human Service presented her research on October 11th as part of the Faculty of Education and Social Work’s Fall 2017 Research Provocations seminar series. In her talk, entitled Decolonizing and reconciling pedagogies in the academy: A settler Social Work educator’s perspective, Straka shared frameworks and principles from her educational practice, including example assignments, to explore ways in which Settler educators can learn to unsettle the colonial foundations of their knowledge base and institutions and bring Indigenous knowledges and ways of being and doing into the classroom. The ten-week, interdisciplinary Fall 2017 Research Provocations series runs every Wednesday from 5:00 – 6:00 pm in AE 366 and is open to all members of the TRU community; the full program can be viewed here.
