Thompson Rivers University students and alumni have the opportunity to meet area employers at Job Fair 2008 on March 13 from 10 am to 3 pm.

Each year the Job Fair experiences a significant increase in the number of students attending the event. It’s expected that over 2000 students and alumni will be on campus to connect with employers, making this an amazing recruiting resource for the 65 employers attending.

“Students and TRU staff recognize the high value of this event in connecting students to employers “immensely helping students with the transition from school to career,” said Susan Forseille, TRU Job Fair Coordinator who is also ensuring students are aware of this event. An army of volunteers are putting up posters, doing class presentations, and working at information stations around campus. “The goal is to ensure every TRU student knows about this event and feels compelled to attend this amazing opportunity. This will result in employers having more applicants to select from in this employee market.”

A value-added service for students is the workshops designed to students maximize the Job Fair opportunity. “I discuss what to expect at the job fair, how to prepare for it, questions to ask during it and follow-up to conduct,” she said. The workshops are well attended and past employers comment that our students tend to be active participants in the Job Fair and not un-engaged observers. There are only two workshops to select from, March 5 and 10, both at 4:30 in OM 2231.

Employers recognize that part of an effective recruiting strategy includes sharing information with post-secondary students on their organization and employment opportunities. They are coming to TRU because of the diversity in programs and courses, including trades, sciences, arts, business, tourism, technology and the many other programs at TRU and are interested in meeting students looking for summer, graduate, part-time, full-time and seasonal work. Employers have also emphatically stated they are interested in talking with students at all level of their education, from first years, to fourth years and alumni “and not just recent graduates.

Another value-added addition is for employers attending the Job Fair. Winners of the BC Tourism Conference Student Case Study will be doing a presentation at 11:00 am and 1:30 pm (Campus Activity Centre, C130) on “How to Recruit and Retain Generation Y.” This presentation is full of valuable advice on how the values and motivators for today’s youth is impacting their decisions on who they want to work with and how long they stay with that company.

This year’s Platinum sponsors are the Chartered Accountants of British Columbia and RBC.
