KAMLOOPS-As the winter semester winds to a close, students anxiously await the outcome of exams and final essays. Some students, however, have already received tangible proof of their success. Here is a sample of student
success across the disciplines at UCC:
Sciences: UCC Sciences students Eric Bottos, Stephanie Richards, and Stuart Chambers, all of Kamloops, have been awarded with Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Postgraduate Scholarships-Master’s (PGSM) to help them with expenses associated with graduate studies in their disciplines.
Fine Arts: Shima Iuchi of Japan, a UCC Bachelor of Fine Arts degree graduate, has been accepted into the Cooper Union Art Residency Program in New York City.
Culinary Arts: Three of UCC’s Level III Culinary Arts students brought medals home from the Hot Food Competition at The Food Expo at BC Place March 1st. Jason Whitfield received a Silver Medal, while Virginia Jensen and Kevin Fraser both took home Bronze.
Tourism Management: Tourism degree graduates Val Jenner and Patricia Albright have their tour company featured in Westworld Magazine’s current issue.
Arts: Geography major Clive Lovett won the award for the best undergraduate research presentation at the Western Division of the Canadian Association of Geographer’s annual conference.
Athletics: UCC Sun Demons Basketball player Skye Buck will be awarded the Men’s College BasketballBC Player of the Year award May 1st in Vancouver. He also won the BCCAA Player of the Year award and was named to the CCAA Tournament Championship All-Stars 1st team last month.
Nursing: 3rd-year Nursing students Kathryn Hansen and Jennifer Grinstead have been chosen for the BC Interprofessional Rural Placement Program for summer interprofessional team practicums.
Advanced Technology: Computer Automated Systems Technician student Greg Hibbert won Gold at the recent Skills Canada Provincial Competition. He will compete in the Nationals to be held at the end of May.
Trades & Technology: Joinery student Ian Pavluk won Gold, Welding student Carson Bischoff won Silver, Welding student Joshua DeWeerd won Bronze and Carpentry student Graeme Herman won Bronze at the recent Skills Canada Provincial Competition.
