Elder In The House: EstellaEstella is from Nakazdli First Nations in Fort St. James. She is a fluent speaker of the Carrier language and loves sharing her knowledge of the Carrier traditions, ceremonies, and women’s ways. She is also an elder on campus to a new generation of aboriginal students. The Gathering Place is where the elders provide personal consultation, conversation, guidance and mentorship.
Joanne: Alumni & Aboriginal CoordinatorJoanne Brown is an Alumni of TRU and now an employee. She works with the Aboriginal Education Centre providing all aspects of student support including funding applications, advocacy to external agencies, liaison with faculty and referrals to appropriate departments based on student and faculty need. Joanne manages all services and programs at the Gathering Place. Here, she stands with a piece of First Nations art titled 'Wall drum, hexagonal'. The work is acrylic on canvas, hangs in the new House of Learning and was created by Secwepemc artist Dave Seymour. It is part of the Aboriginal Education Centre's permanent collection.
