Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is recognized in the Maclean’s University Rankings for the first time, placing 17th among 19 Canadian universities in the mid-size category in the 2027 rankings.

TRU performed particularly well in student resources and support, ranking fifth for the proportion of operating budget dedicated to student services. The result reflects the university’s intentional focus on prioritizing student-facing services, even as it navigates the financial challenges facing the post-secondary sector.

“Featuring in the Maclean’s University Rankings for the first time is an important milestone for TRU and a recognition of the dedication of our faculty, staff, students and leaders,” said TRU President and Vice-Chancellor Airini.

“We always remember that we exist because we were wanted by the communities we serve and striving for excellence in education and research are vital to that purpose. This national recognition gives us tremendous encouragement as we continue building TRU’s future together.”

TRU also placed eighth in the reputation survey category, a notable highlight of growing national profile and recognition of its distinctive model as B.C.’s first dual-sector research university.

The annual Maclean’s rankings assess Canada’s universities across 15 performance indicators grouped into four broad categories: student experience and success, faculty quality, student resources and support, and reputation. Universities do not formally submit data for the rankings, which draw on third-party sources such as Statistics Canada and the Canadian Association of University Business Officers (CAUBO). The mid-size category, in which TRU is ranked, includes universities with between 10,000 and 30,000 full-time equivalent students.

As a dual-sector research university, TRU unifies academic programs and research with trades and vocational education. The university leads in use-inspired education and research applied to challenges in Interior B.C and contributing to provincial and global futures.

The university’s first inclusion in the Maclean’s rankings offers a new national benchmark as TRU continues to advance our core mission of education and research for Interior B.C. and Canada.
