Investing in TRU teacher education futures

November 17, 2016

Dr. Carol Rees, Associate Professor, School of Education

TRU’s commitment to continuous improvement in teacher education took another step forward this week with the regular review of the TRU Bachelor of Education. This successful program has 92 per cent of education graduates in the labour force two years after graduation (Ministry of Advanced Education report, 2015). For the first time the review panel included a member of the School District 73 leadership team, and specific expertise in Indigenous education. In addition, the Panel brought expertise in practicum, community-based teacher education, and international models in teacher education. The Panel commented very favourably on the passion and pride with which students spoke about their B.Ed. program. The Panel’s visit confirms intentions to continued service to the region, leadership and partnership in K-16 innovations, and expansion through open learning delivery, meaningful indigenised teacher education, and a commitment to social justice and reconciliation through education. TRU’s Bachelor of Education program is led by the School of Education Chair Associate Professor Carol Rees, and Acting B.Ed. Coordinator Dr. Edward Howe, and is based in the Faculty of Education and Social Work.
