TRU Trades and Technology‘s mobile training unit (MTU) is hitting the road again and this time it means 12 people in Hope, BC can stay closer to home while receiving their entry-level welding training.
MTU is a 12 welding-bay expandable trailer capable of delivering the welding foundation program and other industry contract training in smaller and remote communities.
In Hope from Aug. 3 to Jan. 29, 2016, students will be a mix of two adults and 10 high schoolers enrolled in the dual credit ACE IT program. What the student mix is and how long the trailer is stationed in a community depends on the training being delivered. Hope is receiving a compressed 26 weeks from the typical 28.
“The TRU MTU coming to our rural community has really created a flurry of conversations and possibilities for our learners, and for some, has really opened their mind to new career options,” said Karl Koslowsky, who oversees trades/work experience at Hope secondary. “It has sparked some to actively take action with their career and future, while others see new possibilities and alternative career directions.
MTU is a partnership between TRU’s School of Trades and Technology, School District 73, with some funding coming from the Industry Training Authority. The Hope stay means not only partnering for the first time with School District 78, but also being in the district as well.
MTU has been in operation for several years and during that time has been stationed on one or more times in Agassiz, Chase, Clearwater, Clinton Lillooet, and Mica Creek.
