Trades Students Mix With Cabinet Ministers

October 15, 2014

Y Dream Home

John Rustad, left, B.C. minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, speaks with Women in Trades Training program student Shavonne Mountain during an informal visit to the Y Dream Home worksite the morning of Sept. 17, 2014.

Trades students had the rare opportunity to share their learning with three British Columbia cabinet ministers during their stop in Kamloops last month for cabinet caucus meetings.

Ministers John Rustad, (Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation), Don McRae (Social Development and Social Innovation), and Amrik Virk (Advanced Education) were in town and found time to stop by the Y Dream Home worksite the morning of Sept. 17, 2014.

The Y Dream Home is a lottery fundraiser for the Kamloops YMCA/YWCA and for more than 20 years, TRU trades students have been involved in various stages of the building of the home. The partnership extends to include the Canadian Home Builders’ Association—Central Interior (CHBA-CI), with a different member contractor overseeing the project each year. CHBA-CI recently awarded TRU with the Best Public/Private Partnership award during its 10th annual Keystone Home Builders Awards of Excellence. It is an award TRU has won a number of times through the years.

On Sept. 17, the students made up two groups, with Carpenter Foundation Residential Construction being one and the other being the most recent intake of Women in Trades Training, which is a multi-week program introducing students to six Red Seal trades among other things.

This year’s home is located in Juniper Ridge at 2000 Qu’Appelle Blvd.
