At least 20 TRU students are homeless as a result of yesterday’s fire at the Copper Ridge Court Apartments in Sahali. There were no reports of injuries.
Students affected by the fire are strongly encouraged to contact Duane Seibel, Manager of Student and Judicial Affairs by phone 250.852.7117 or by email at dseibel@tru.ca
“At this point, we know that the insurance company will be setting up displaced residents in hotels for three nights and providing meal vouchers,” said Dean of Students Christine Adam. “We will help where we can in finding suitable accommodations for our students after this, but some of them may have lost many things they need to succeed in their studies.”
Anyone who wishes to offer a room to affected students should contact Student and Judicial Affairs at 250.852.7117.
The TRU Foundation will collect funds to support students needing help to make ends meet over the rest of the semester. There are three ways to donate:
1. Send a cheque intercampus mail addressed to the Foundation. Make the cheque out to the TRU Foundation and note on the cheque that it is for the students affected by the fire or to the Emergency Bursary Fund.
2. Call x5264 to process a donation by credit card.
3. Go online at tru.ca/makeagift. Check the box “Specific scholarship or award.” In the box “Award Name” please type: Emergency Bursary Fund.
The TRU Foundation will provide tax receipts to all contributors.
A meeting for all residents affected by the fire will be held at 11a.m., Thursday March 1 at the Interior Savings Centre.
