Thompson Rivers University will recognize the leadership, vision, and community service of a man who made extraordinary contributions to TRU’s development by conferring an honorary doctorate to Ronald Olynyk at the Fall Convocation Ceremony on Friday, October 7, 2011 at 2pm in the TRU Gymnasium.
Ron Olynyk served on the TRU Board of Governors as Board Chair from February 2002 until November 2009. During this tenure, TRU achieved University status, became a member of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport and Canada West University Athletic Association. The Institution also undertook the most active capital construction program in the University’s history including the new Campus in Williams Lake, International Building, Student Residences and Conference Center, BC Center for Open Learning, as well as breaking ground on the Brown Family House of Learning. The TRU Board, under Ron’s leadership, forged strong partnerships with the City of Kamloops, and was instrumental in the development of the McGill Corridor Redevelopment Plan, The Tournament Capital Center, Water Treatment Center, and the addition of a major transit hub on campus.
In the position of Board Chair, Ron’s wisdom and calm, non-confrontational style assisted in guiding the agenda of the University forward. During his seven years of service, he was a highly respected representative of the University.
“The University is truly pleased to honour Ron Olynyk who dedicated so much of his time to the University,” said Alan Shaver, President and Vice-Chancellor. “TRU convocations are very special celebrations of community and achievement, and we are proud to celebrate the leadership of Ron and this important milestone for our graduates.”
In addition to his contribution to TRU, Ron was also active in other areas of the Kamloops community. He was an executive member of the Chamber of Commerce and Kamloops CA Association, serving a term as President of each. He has held positions on several local committees and was the Financial Agent in one federal and four provincial elections. Ron has volunteered in community events such as the 1993 Canada Summer Games.
“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve such a great institution, and to be the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate. The seven years were exciting, challenging and extremely rewarding and the exceptional growth of TRU could not have been achieved without a highly talented Administration, President, and Board. “
Ron Olynyk graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary in 1974. After teaching in the public school system for 2 years he returned to the University of Calgary to complete the Chartered Accountant designation. Ron and family moved to Kamloops in 1989. He has operated a successful CA Practice since 1993 and recently sold his business to the Kamloops office of BDO Canada, where he continues to offer consulting services as an associate.
Ron has been married to Susan, a Certified Financial Planner, for 38 years and together they have two children and seven grandchildren.
