History of this event:
On December 6, 1989, Marc Lepine walked into the L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal and, separating the men from the women, methodically killed 14 women who were studying engineering, simply because they were women. Since then, December 6th has been declared a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It is the Canadian day of mourning for women who have met with violent deaths.
Once again, the organizers of the Kamloops Shoe Memorial will be collecting shoes for women and girls (any condition). These shoes will be displayed to raise public awareness for violence against women. We are honouring the memory of the women and their families by attaching name cards to each pair of donated shoes which represents a woman who has been killed in violence; the names are also displayed on a Memory Board.
After the memorial the shoes are given to women in need. (Women’s Shelter). Lyn Chasse, coordinator of the Kamloops Shoe memorial project says “As a person touched by violence, December 6th holds special meaning for me. I have found solace by holding the Shoe Memorial to honour not just my mother, but all women and girls who have lost their lives to violence.”
