Elizabeth Fry Society, TRUSU, TRUFA Status of Women and West Coast LEAF are very pleased to be able to invite you to attend Kamloops’ second Persons Day Breakfast at the Plaza Heritage Hotel on October 13 from 7– 9 am in celebration of the 81anniversary of Persons Day.

On October 18, 1929, the Supreme Court of Canada recognized women as “persons” under the law enabling a woman to be appointed to the Senate. This decision advanced the cause of women’s equality rights and opened the doors to women to serve in a number of capacities previously unavailable.

The guest speaker is Nitya Iyer, LLB, LLM. Ms. Iyer is the President of West Coast LEAF and practices law at the firm of Heenan Blaikie in the area of public law, specifically constitutional law, human rights and pay equity, for which she advises governments and employers, and acts for them in complaints. Nitya has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada and was a full time member of the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal. Previously, she taught at the University of Toronto’s Law Faculty, and was an associate professor at the University of British Columbia. Please join in celebrating this significant anniversary.

Tickets are $35, $25 for students, and are available through the Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society at 250.374.2119 ext 207, louise@kamloopsefry.com or can be purchased with a credit card through West Coast LEAF by phoning 1-866-737-7716.
