Senior ITA leader appointed as new Dean of Trades & Technology

The Senior Lead for Program Standards and Examinations at the Industry Training Authority (ITA), the body that oversees all trades training in B.C., has accepted an appointment as the new Dean of Trades and Technology at Thompson Rivers University

Lindsay Langill will officially join the university March 1 on a five-year appointment, replacing retiring Dean and long-time TRU, UCC and Cariboo College faculty member and administrator, Ralph Finch.

“I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to join TRU and the incredibly gifted staff that is currently working so well with industry to ensure that skills training is kept current and meets industry’s needs to stay competitive in today’s market, ” said Langill”. Skills training for youth, apprentices, challengers, trades qualifiers and journeyperson upgrades continue to be critical to ensure the economic viability of our community, province and country.

“We must always strive to find ways to provide for this “skill transfer” to our students – our client. As Dean, my door will always open to those who want to connect with trades and technology education. I look forward to joining this great community and continuing the hard work of Ralph Finch.”

Langill, who is currently BC’s representative on the Council of Canadian Directors of Apprenticeships and the Interprovincial Standards Examination Committee, brings to TRU an extensive background in both secondary and post-secondary education and trades and apprenticeship training

A graduate of UBC, with a Bachelor of Education and Master of Arts degrees, Langill is a “Red Seal” certified Welder, Pipefitter and Industrial Mechanic (Millwright)Between 1990 and 2004 he held a number of instructional and administrative positions at the secondary and post-secondary levels, and in 1993 was awarded the Prime Minister of Canada Award for Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology and Mathematics.

In his work with the ITA and the Ministry of Education, Langill led many large projects and was instrumental in fostering relationships with industry, training providers, communities, First Nations, and governmentsHe has also been involved in various political reviews, accreditations, and articulation committees, and from 1998-2004 was the President of the BC Technology Education Association.
