The first two major contributions to the Thompson Rivers University House of Learning were announced on Saturday at the 17th annual TRU Foundation Gala.
Kamloops businessman Ron Fawcett and his wife Rae announced a donation of $250,000 to build Fawcett Hall, a study hall in the new facility. This is the second major gift in the last six months the couple has made to the universityIn October they donated $50,000 to create an endowment for student assistance
“The future of our community is dependant on supporting our youth in achieving educational success,” Fawcett said. “Some of that success depends on building the libraries and study spaces that enhance student’s learning experiences.”
The IndoCan Links, the group that has hosted 12 annual charity golf tournaments, have pledged $150,000 to sponsor a classroom to be named The Indo Canadian Room. “Our contribution will build important space at TRU that will help generations become educated and productive citizens “cornerstones for a healthy society,” said Sukh Gill the group’s spokesman.
“These donors are true leaders for our House of Learning building campaign, ” said Christopher Seguin, TRU Vice-President Advancement. “Donations like these in the midst of current economic cycle set a positive tone and underline the value our society has for post-secondary education and what an important pillar the university is to the Kamloops economy.”
First announced in April 2008, the $32 million House of Learning project will provide a significant addition to library and learning space for all students on campus, and also incorporate features and facilities to enhance the learning needs of Aboriginal students.
The Province of BC will contribute $18 million to the building that will be designed and built to LEED Gold standards. TRU has committed $5 million towards funding and is undertaking a major capital campaign to raise the remaining $9 million. “These two lead donations are a fantastic start to our campaign and stand as examples to other leaders in our community as we move forward to build the House of Learning, ” said Seguin.
