KAMLOOPS – Lovers of theatre in Kamloops are in for a treat this spring, as the TRU Actors Workshop rehearses for the eighth annual Director’s Festival, to be held at the TRU Actors Workshop theatre April 9-14.
Featuring nine short student-directed one-act plays over two nights, the festival wraps up the university theatre program’s 23rd season with comedy, drama, politics, love, magic and mystery.
The plays are grouped into two nights, A and B, with the A group staged April 9, 11 and 13 and B group performed April 10, 12 and 14.
“A night” offerings include The Art of Dating by Jeffery Scott Elwell (no matter the arrangement, you can’t escape the true nature of love); Recess by Corrina Hodgson (superheroes and schoolgirls alike fall victim to gender politics); Hopscotch by Israel Horovitz (two former lovers reunite, revealing the shattering truth of their tragic past); Babel Rap by John Lazarus (a comedic sparring, up in the clouds, about the purpose of life); and Caught in the Act by Bruce Kane (a couple’s decision to make love could alter their entire reality).
On “B night,” the students will stage The Tiger by Murray Schisgal (a dark comedy that reveals the frustrations of two isolated urbanites); Have You Met Our Rabbit? by Michael Stevens (a hilarious comic romp in which two people battle a language barrier that breaks down into basic physical communication in a candid and funny look at how modern beauty ideals affect women and cause them to re-examine their self image); The Maker of Dreams by Oliphant Down (a 94 year-old play where magic is real and two young people are visited by a mysterious stranger); and Does This Woman Have a Name? by Theresa Rebeck (a play about friendship, love and phone sex).
Please note that many of the plays on both nights feature adult themes and strong language.
All performances begin at 8 pm. Tickets are $10 for each night’s performance and can be purchased at the theatre box office, Monday through Friday from 11 am to 2 pm, or on each performance night. Call 377-6100 for reservations.
