Culture on campus next week

KAMLOOPS – Next week at TRU, the First Nations Student Association will present a week of cultural activities from March 19 to 23, while a group of students will present a Culture Feast event March 20 to support International Elimination of Racial Discrimination day March 21.

Monday kicks off with an opening ceremony at 11:30 am, with a prayer, welcoming, speakers, displays and lunch.

Tuesday features the Elder’s Luncheon for elders and dignitaries, and a Healing with Humour workshop that evening starting at 6 pm in the Grand Hall.

Tuesday is also the day that TRU students Monique Smith, Susan Cairnie and Jillian Sweetnam of Oxfam TRU host the ISAP-sponsored 2nd annual Culture Feast, featuring student speakers from China, U.S. Norway, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Zimbabwe, who will discuss similarities and differences between their countries and Canada, as well as the Desert Bloomers can-can dancers, and international cuisine. The event starts at 7 pm in the Panorama Room, located on the third floor of TRU’s International Building, and is open to the public.

Admission to Culture Feast is free, with a suggested food or $2 donation which will be used by Oxfam to further its work toward eliminating discrimination and promoting cultural understanding.

Wednesday will feature workshops from 11 am to 3 pm in room 1219 of the Old Main Building, and a free drum-making workshop conducted by Sam Saul of Chu Chua, starting at 1:30 in the Independent Centre. Only six drum will be made on a first-come, first-served basis at a cost of $50 each, which is half the regular cost.

On Friday, artists will perform in the Alumni Theatre, located in TRU’s Clock Tower building. Doors open at 6 pm with the event beginning at 7; admission is by donation.

First Nations Awareness Week wraps up with a pow-wow on Saturday. Grand Entry starts at 1, and dinner provided in partnership with the TRU Wellness Centre is scheduled for 5 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend and take part.
