AAA Provincial High School Championships Most Outstanding Player Kyle Donen will play university volleyball next year with the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.

The 5’10” senior from Semiahmoo, also a member of the Under-16 Team BC volleyball team, was named a tournament all-star at the invitational tournament held at TRU last month, where he came to head coach Pat Hennelly’s attention.

“Kyle Donen is a proven winner at the high school and club volleyball level,” said Hennelly.

“I watched Kyle make three incredible digs during the AAA high school semi-finals. His team was facing elimination and Kyle would not let the ball hit the ground. I feel Kyle’s attitude and ball control will make an immediate impact for the WolfPack in 2006.”

Captain of his high school team since 2001, Donen has consistently been named all-star and MVP at tournaments over the past five years, including MVP of the 2005 UBC Invitational Tournament and the Fraser Valley High School Championships, and tournament all-star at the BC Club Provincial championships, BC AAA High School Championships, and the Western Canadian National Championships.

Hennelly sees a lot of potential in the young player, and a good fit with his team, which is playing CIS-level volleyball for the first time this year.

“Kyle will be competing in the setter and libero spots for the WolfPack, the two most important positions on the court. He’s the type of player who wants the ball in tough situations and plays up to the challenge,” he said.

Donen is the first of four high school players Hennelly hopes to sign for 2006.

“I will be looking to add a few more high school players over the month of December and I will be making home visits to Justin Merta in Quesnel, Steve Clements in Kelowna and Aaron Vandenbrink in Langley,” he said.
