The Ultimate Winter Break
There is no better way to experience winter than skating in the great outdoors. As soon as the ice sets, the TRU community is invited to get a breakaway between classes on the new outdoor ice rink on the Campus Green, just outside of Old Main’s Student Street. Temperatures are expected to hover around freezing it should be cold enough soon to keep the ice surface suitable for a game of shinny hockey or for busting out a few of the old figure skate moves. Skaters are reminded that they use the rink at their own risk and to wear helmets if they have them.
The 4,750 square foot rink will be maintained until the end of International Days on February 5.
Norm Logan, who is TRU's Carpentry Coordinator for Facilities Services, will be spending parts of the weekend ensuring the ice sets properly for the first-ever outdoor rink at Thompson Rivers University. The temporary structure was attracting a lot of interest from passersby on Friday, Jan. 22.
A hose sprays water for the outdoor ice rink being created at Thompson Rivers University. The rink is about 50 feet by 95 feet and will require about 6,000 gallons of water in order to create 3 inches of thickness. A wooden frame boarders the rink, with a plastic membrane holding the water in. If the weather cools over the weekend, the rink could be operational on Monday. Skaters will use the rink at their own risk and are urged to wear a helmet.
