How can Indigenous, feminist and queer perspectives on leadership inspire collaboration, strengthen communities and create positive change?

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) invites the campus and Kamloops communities to explore these questions with distinguished scholars Dr. Jan Hare and Dr. El Chenier at the upcoming Women in Leadership event on Monday, Nov. 9.

The discussion, Leading Through Relationship: Indigenous, Feminist, and Queer Visions of Collective Change, will be moderated by Dr. Amie McLean, intercultural coordinator in TRU’s Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism.

Hare is an Anishinaabe scholar from the M’Chigeeng First Nation in northern Ontario and dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia. She holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Pedagogy, exploring how Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing can transform teaching and learning in higher education.

Chenier is associate dean of graduate studies and professor of history at Simon Fraser University. Their teaching and research draw on feminist, anti-racist, anti-colonial and queer perspectives, with a focus on the history of gender and sexuality in Canada and the United States. They are currently leading an initiative to improve accessibility in graduate education.

The free event is part of TRU’s Women in Leadership Series, co-sponsored by TRU Provost and Vice-President Academic Dr. Gordon Binsted and the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism.

“Meaningful leadership begins with listening, building relationships and recognizing the diverse perspectives and experiences that strengthen our communities,” said Dr. Gordon Binsted, provost and vice-president academic. “Through the Women in Leadership Series, TRU is creating space for important conversations that advance equity, inclusion and collective action toward positive change.”

Faculty, staff, students and community members interested in leadership, equity and social change are welcome to attend. Complimentary childcare will be provided by the Cariboo Childcare Society, available with advance registration.
