CBC North | Wildfire near Yellowknife created its own weather and spawned a stormcloud that sent smoke 10 km into the air

A wildfire-generated storm, driven by a blaze on the North Arm of Great Slave Lake, built up west and southwest of Yellowknife on Tuesday (July 12), creating pyrocumulonimbus clouds — or pyro-Cbs, for short. Dr. Mike Flannigan, wildfire expert at Thompson Rivers University, says that as our climate continues to warm, we’ll see more extreme wildfire behaviours. “The new reality is that we’re on a trajectory of more and more fire, more and more smoke, and more and more fire-generated thunderstorms,” he told CBC.
