Russian – one of the world’s most-spoken modern languages – is now being offered at Thompson Rivers University.
Beginning this fall, students can enrol in Introductory Russian 1 and follow that up in the winter with Introductory Russian 2. The fall course is for those with no or very little experience with the language while the winter course is for those with some experience and described as ‘high beginner/low intermediate’ speakers.
“I will guide you through this fascinating journey of learning a new language,” says course instructor Susanna Fawkes in a printed greeting to students. “I hope by the end of the fall semester your ability to communicate in Russian and understand the culture of the Russian-speaking world will surprise you as it will surpass your expectations.”
Introductory Russian 1 and 2 focus on communicative skills like speaking, listening, reading, and writing as well as the cultural awareness necessary for traveling and doing business in Russian-speaking countries and communities.
“Russian will open new doors for you,” says Fawkes. “More than 160 nationalities speak Russian, so you will be able to communicate with locals while travelling or working not only in Russia, but also in 14 other countries including former Soviet republics. Most importantly, it will help you succeed in your career.”
