For some time, Nina Johnson had been noticing that students in her introductory creative writing class had trouble putting aside their cell phones at the beginning of class.

Distracted by electronics and fearful of the blank pages in front of them, the students struggled to find the concentration they needed to write.

Johnson came to realize that her students were suffering from what Buddhists have termed “the monkey mind,” a restless, agitated state that is the opposite of the calm mind required for focused observation and creativity.
