The TRU World Facebook page has been engaging its users by regularly posting video, photos, and information about Kamloops and the university. Students share events, news, and stories, as well as ask each other questions and even sell their old textbooks. While many current students, staff and residents of Kamloops are fans of the page, the majority of the 100,000 fans are students overseas who wish to get a glimpse of what is like to study and live in Canada.
Top countries on page:
1. Indonesia -16,300 fans
2. India 16,000
3. Turkey 11,200
4. Colombia 11,600
5. Philippines 10,700
“Reaching the 100,000 mark is an exciting achievement. We have worked hard over the past year to develop our social media strategy,” said Mike Henniger, TRU Director, International Marketing, International Education.
“It is extraordinary we have been able to gather such a large group on Facebook,” Henniger added. This is more than just a number though, it is great to see the engagement that is taking place on our Facebook page.”
Students have reported that they are finding roommates and friends online before coming to Canada. They are asking questions and sharing information with other students.
“This is really what social media is about: sharing experiences and information with your peers,” said Henniger.
TRU World launched its social media campaign last November in India in conjunction with the opening of its office in Bangalore and BC Premier Christy Clark’s visit.
