With the addition of the Power Line Technician Program, TRU becomes the only school in BC to offer three Red-Seal electrical trades.
Kamloops – Thompson Rivers University School of Trades and Technology is adding the Power Line Technician program to its suite of electrical trades offerings.
Lindsay Langill, Dean TRU School of Trades and Technology announced an agreement with the Line Contractor’s Association (LCA) of BC to support TRU’s delivery of the power line technician’s program by participating in TRU’s program advisory committee for this program, and by directing a group of first year PLT apprentices to TRU next year once its program is up and running. The LCA will work with TRU to make the program a success, and will make appropriate use of TRU in the future to meet the training needs of its members.
The Power Line Technician program will complement the Construction Electrician and the Industrial Electrician programs currently offered at TRU.
‘TRU is very progressive in working with industry to find solutions in a challenging labor market.’ – Doug MacLaren, CEO of the Resource Training Organization
“Where training is concerned, our highest responsibility is to ensure that the skilled work force is receiving the best possible training as trades trainees, apprentices and journeyed workers, ” said Robin Lucas, Line Contractors Association of BC, President”. For us it was clear that Thompson Rivers University could do that for us.”
According to Langill the association was motivated to lend its support to TRU for the new program because of the superior educational infrastructure, which includes opportunities and options for students to ladder their trades credentials into the Bachelor of Trades and Technology Leadership degree program and the suitable site to build a training lab”. Certainly, our comprehensive university structure played a large role in bringing all the pieces together.”
Doug MacLaren, CEO of the Resource Training Organization commented that “we are very supportive of any initiative that shows leadership and certainly TRU is very progressive in working with industry to find solutions in a challenging labor market.”
The LCA, responsible for approximately 60 per cent of all BC Hydro Line work in the province, will also provide appropriate support for program start-up. Support includes active participation in the Industry Advisory Committee and assistance with lab development to ensure that TRU labs are well focused on the needs of the power line industry.
