Thompson Rivers University reports that the applications for the upcoming academic year are up 6 per cent over this time last year. It’s an increase of upwards of 350 domestic student applications.
“We are continuing to accept applications in many programs, including first year university Arts, Science and Business,” said Peter Hilton, TRU Vice Provost Students”. We will continue to register students right into the first week of classes in September.” Total student application numbers will be finalized in mid-September.
Notable program increases include:
Bachelor of Fine Arts -8%
Bachelor of Natural Resource Science – 9%
Bachelor of Science – 6%
Master of Science – 53%
Respiratory Therapy – 55%
Bachelor of Computing Science – 13%
Master of Business Admin – 18%
Police & Justice Studies Diploma – 25%
Early Childhood Education Diploma – 41%
Bachelor of Science in Nursing – 16%

Adventure Management Diploma – (second year of program) – 200%
Adventure Sports Certificate – (second year of program) – 500%
Culinary Arts – 50%
Retail Meat Processing – 200%
“Most of our programs have the same application levels as last year,” Hilton said. “The only area of significant declines would be Trades, where most entry-level programs are at 50-70 per cent of last year’s applicationsBut this also means that we have manageable application numbers, as opposed to the unrealistic numbers of the past two years.
“The softening of applications for trades is not unexpected, given the economy, but we still expect to run full programs, and may well see the applications increase sooner rather than later as economic recovery news impacts the trades / construction sectors.”
TRU’s new Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies may admit as many as 16 students this fall, well above the expected intake of 10.
