From environmentally friendly cleaning supplies to a new Masters of Science Environmental Science degree program and now a new Environmental Advisory Committee, Thompson Rivers University is going green.

“The formation of the committee is a really great step forward for TRU as we develop a plan to become the University of Choice for Environmental Sustainability,” said Dr. Penny Powers, the chair of the committee.

The committee became active in January and has had a couple of busy months getting things rolling, and reacting to the provincial mandate calling for all public sector institutions to go carbon-neutral by 2010.

“With an institutional commitment to sustainability, and a provincial mandate for climate action, TRU is poised to make a difference,” said Powers. “And with the energy and great ideas we already have on campus, we are well on our way.”

To showcase past successes and current initiatives in environmental activities at TRU, the committee is actively seeking stories to develop a history of action at TRU.

“As a new committee it is important that we know what has been tried before, and what the successes and failures have been,” said Powers. “We are hoping the community will support us, and tell us their stories.”
