Around 60 faculty and staff gathered Friday in the Barber Centre and by livestream to participate in the first joint meeting of the Board of Governors, Senate, and the Planning Council for Open Learning (PCOL) as part of TRU’s Open Governance Initiative.

The meeting was led by Chancellor Wally Oppal, President Alan Shaver (senate chair), Provost and Vice-President Academic Christine Bovis-Cnossen (chair of Planning Council for Open Learning), and Jim Thomson (chair of the Board of Governors) as an opportunity to discuss TRU’s unique tricameral governance model and increase open consultation with the university community.

General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, John Sparks, gave a presentation on TRU’s unique tricameral governance model, its structure and the roles of the various governing bodies.

“All three governing bodies share in divided governance with equal responsibility. That’s an essential element of a modern institution,” said Sparks.

The open-floor style meeting served as a platform to achieve greater transparency and open consultation, ultimately to increase the effectiveness of TRU’s collegial governance structures and accessibility of senior administrators.
