Erin-Adel Hrycan will deliver her presentation, "Soulful Knowledge: Using Indigenous Perspective to Construct New Pedagogies for Whole Learning," during the Undergraduate Research & Innovation Conference, taking place March 18-19.

The Undergraduate Research & Innovation Conference is a showcase of the diversity of student research taking place on campus, and for those participating, the conference is an opportunity to leap past personal comfort zones to gain experience and confidence.

Erin-Adel Hrycan participated last year, and she’s back again once more delivering her presentation, “Soulful Knowledge: Using Indigenous Perspective to Construct New Pedagogies for Whole Learning,” on Saturday afternoon.

Complete conference schedule

Hrycan graduates this year with two degrees — a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education — and says that despite the effort it takes to prepare, the opportunity is worth it, as students are given the opportunity to have their work published in the event’s conference proceedings, as well as in TRU’s Undergraduate Research Journal.

“Participating builds self-confidence,” she said, and for those looking to graduate school, “it provides an opportunity to make your resume a little more competitive.”

As always, the conference begins with poster presentations on Friday between noon and 6 p.m. on the third floor of House of Learning. Saturday, there are concurrent lecture sessions taking place in the International Building between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Hrycan learned so much from her first experience that she was excited to participate once more.

“You learn how to make information very concise and clear for all levels of expertise,” she said.

“Once you’ve gone through this experience you can see how valuable it is. There is value in just listening and learning. And there is value in being scared and doing it anyway, despite your fears.”
