New book by TRU Law professor provides thoughtful look at the polygamous community of Bountiful

TRU Law professor Craig Jones has written an insightful and thoughtful book looking at the polygamous community of Bountiful BC.

“A Cruel Arithmetic, Inside the Case Against Polygamy” is an exposé of the polygamous community of Bountiful, BC and the trial that shocked the nation is launched by Craig Jones, QC, TRU Faculty of Law.

Jones, former lead counsel for the Attorney General of British Columbia, has written a 400 page book that offers a remarkable insider’s story as he and his colleagues developed their arguments against polygamy, drawing from fields as diverse as anthropology, history, economics, and evolutionary psychology.

In a thoughtful and open-minded documentation of the Polygamy Reference, Jones traces an unexpected evolution in his personal beliefs: from his initial “Left Coast” civil libertarian leanings against criminalizing polygamy to a firm opposition to polygamy’s “cruel arithmetic”—harms to women and children, to society at large, and even to the very foundation of democracy itself.
