Students Shine at U-grad Conference

TRU had three students present at the Annual Regional Undergraduate Research Day at UBC-O in Kelowna in early April.

Held in conjunction with their Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference, there was a total of 32 poster presentations and 31 oral presentations.

Representing TRU was science students Jillian Rutherford, Paige Hegadoren, and Priya Parekh. Rutherford and Hegadoren earned special recognition.

Rutherford
A fourth-year student, Jillian won overall Best Oral Presentation for her talk titled, “Using Operant Conditioning to Facilitate Physiological Sampling from Captive Ungulates.” She also presented a poster on the same topic.

Dr. John Church served as supervisor and Dr. Tom Dickinson as co-supervisor.

Rutherford credits TRU’s Theatre Arts program and one of its instructors, Heidi Verwey, for helping develop her presentation skills.

Hegadoren
Completing a degree in Physics, Paige placed third in the category of Best Poster Presentation with her poster titled, “Physical Factors Affecting Infrared Thermography as an Early Disease Detection Method in Cattle.”

Dr. Mark Paetkau and Dr. Church served as supervisors.

Parekh
Priya presented her poster titled “The Influence of Wind Speed on the Dispersal of Dormant Stages of Artemia franciscana.”
