The Chemistry Biochemistry Club (CBC) at TRU recently donated $1,200 to the children’s wing at Royal Inland Hospital.
Typically CBC raises money for club activities, student scholarships, and student bursaries, but chose RIH’s Pediatrics department after one of its own was hit last year with some big-time stress.
Sharon Brewer, who has been the club’s faculty advisor for much of its 20-year existence, learned her 11-year-old son, Kieren O’Neill, had been diagnosed with a rare cancer. Because the club is able to do good through its fund-raising efforts, members came up with the idea to help the Pediatrics ward.
“They are an amazing group of students, and TRU and the Faculty of Science should be really proud of them,” said Sharon and husband Kevin O’Neill.
The money was raised through a pub night, magic show, and numerous bake sales.
“I am so inspired by the generosity these students have shown all in support of Kieren,” said Jennifer Johnson, RIH Foundation’s manager of Annual Events & Stakeholder Relations.
“Royal Inland Hospital staff, the Foundation, and most importantly our smallest patients, are grateful of this wonderful gift,” she added.
