THRIVECindy Piva, of Thrive Business Strategies and Paul Clark, an instructor at TRU’s School of Business and Economics, have co-developed a new “super applied” course.

The idea came after a discussion between Piva and Clark who both realized there was an opportunity to further link business theory with a practical application. A “Course Industry Advisor” position was introduced to acknowledge Piva’s role in the course design and delivery. As a result, the marketing practitioner and academic worked cooperatively when planning this course, which goes by the name of Strategic Marketing (BBUS 4460).

Piva’s practical understanding of what will contribute to students’ success in the marketplace and marketing knowledge were extremely valuable. “It’s great to participate in the application of practical knowledge to the theory of a marketing strategy course… to make the theory more relevant to real business situations,” says Piva. “This, to me, makes the course much more valuable to both the students and the business community.”

Both Clark and Piva hope this course represents the beginning of a new level of cooperation with businesses in the community. “It is a wonderful opportunity to add value for our primary stakeholders, namely local businesses and our business students,” says Clark. “Through course activities the students’ learning experiences will be expanded and the University business programs will further be positioned as a resource for practical knowledge.

Both Piva and Clark are also looking forward to further cooperating with many Kamloops businesses in the future and integrating their experiences into the course content.
